The short version
- To grade your DNS provider, the test needs your IP address. We use it to find your approximate location and your internet provider.
- You never need to give an email address to see your grade or your score.
- We email you only when you ask for a report. We send security tips only if you tick the box for them.
- Analytics cookies stay off until you accept them.
- We do not sell your personal information.
- You can ask us to show you, correct or delete what we hold about you.
Who we are
MyDNSTest at mydnstest.com is a free tool made by Cybird Technologies Inc. (“Cybird”, “we”, “us”), the company behind Cybird. We decide why and how the information described here is used.
What we collect, and why
When you run the DNS test
We receive your IP address and the address of the DNS server that answers your lookups. We look both up with an outside service to find the approximate location, the network provider’s name, and whether the address looks like a VPN, proxy or hosting network. We keep a record of each test: your IP address, your approximate location (city, region, country and map coordinates), your internet provider, the details of your DNS provider, the date and time, and the grade.
We use this to work out your result, to see how the test is used overall, and to spot misuse. Pages and reports you see show a shortened form of your IP address.
Your answers to the network check
We keep your answers to the eight questions with the Test ID and your score, so you can see your result again. If you never give us an email address, the answers are saved without your email and without your location details.
When you ask for a report
- Your email address, and your IT provider’s email address if you give one.
- The report itself: your answers, score and findings. A report keeps only a shortened form of your IP address.
- Whether you ticked the optional box for security tips, and when.
- A record of each email we send you: its type, the time, and whether our email service accepted it.
Your report has a private link made of random characters. Anyone who has the link can open the report, so share it only with people you trust. The link we give your IT provider stops working after 30 days. Your own link keeps working.
If you came from an IT provider’s link
We remember which provider’s link you used, so your report also goes to them. The banner on the page says so before you start.
If you are an IT provider or ISP
To make you a link we keep your name, work email address, company name and the link name. The one-time code we email you is kept only in scrambled form and expires after 10 minutes. If you ask for partner pricing, we keep your name, work email address and the number of clients you support.
Cookies and similar storage
- A session cookie that keeps your test result and your place in the questions together. The site needs it to work. It lasts up to 7 days.
- Your browser’s storage remembers your progress through the questions and your cookie choice.
- Analytics cookies from Google, only if you press Accept in the cookie bar. Until then, no analytics cookies are set.
Analytics
If you accept, we use Google Analytics to see which pages are visited and which steps of the test people complete, for example that the test was started or that a report was requested. We never send your email address, your company name, your IP address, your report link or an IT provider’s email address to Google. Report and unsubscribe links are sent as /r/_ and /unsubscribe/_, without the private part. You can change your choice at any time with “Cookie settings” at the bottom of the page.
Who we share it with
- Amazon Web Services hosts this site and its database, and sends our emails (Amazon SES), so it handles the address and the content of each email we send. The servers are in the United States (Ohio).
- ip-api.com answers our location and network lookups. Your browser contacts it directly to find your DNS server, and our server sends it your IP address and your DNS server’s address.
- Google, for analytics, only if you accept analytics cookies.
- Your IT provider, if you give us their email address, ask us to send them your report, or came from their link. They can see your report, and your email address if you gave one.
- Cybird’s team, who may contact you about Cybird’s services if you ask for a call or for pricing. When a report names an IT provider, we do not contact you about that report without them.
- Authorities or advisers, where the law requires it or to protect our rights.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it for advertising.
Emails
The report email is a service message you asked for. Security tips are sent only if you ticked the box, and you can stop them at any time. Every email we send you about a report has an unsubscribe link. Press the Unsubscribe button on the page it opens, and we stop emailing you about that report.
We do not track whether you open our emails or click the links in them. The emails contain no tracking images, and the links go straight to our pages, or to our booking calendar and the Cybird website. Each link carries a label that says which kind of email it came from (for example utm_campaign=report_owner). The label is the same for everyone who gets that kind of email and does not identify you.
How long we keep it
We keep test records, reports and email records for as long as they are useful for running MyDNSTest or needed to meet legal duties. We delete or anonymise them when you ask us to, as described below.
How we protect it
- The site is served over an encrypted connection (HTTPS).
- Report and IT provider pages are kept out of search engines and are never cached.
- Report links are long random codes that cannot be guessed. Sign-in codes are stored scrambled and stop working after a few wrong tries.
No system is perfectly secure. If something goes wrong that affects you, we will tell you as the law requires.
Your choices and rights
You can ask us to show you the information we hold about you, correct it, delete it, or stop using it for something you did not agree to. You can take back your consent to security tips at any time. Depending on where you live, you may have further rights, including the right to complain to your local data protection authority.
To use any of these, contact us through the details on the Cybird website. Please include the Test ID (it looks like MDT-7K2Q9) or the email address you used, so we can find your records. We may need to check it is you before we act.
Where your information is processed
Our servers are in the United States. By using MyDNSTest you understand that your information is processed there, and in any country where Cybird’s team works.
Children
MyDNSTest is for businesses. It is not meant for children, and we do not knowingly collect information from them.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy we update the date at the top of the page. If the change is important, we will say so on the site.
